Carter G. Woodson was a scholar whose dedication to celebrating the historic contributions of Black people led to the establishment of Black History Month, marked every February since 1976. Woodson fervently believed that Black people should be proud of their heritage and all Americans should understand the largely overlooked achievements of Black Americans. From early Spanish colonialism to civil and worker rights laws to famous firsts to recent Supreme Court decisions on immigration, here’s a timeline of notable events in U.S. Hispanic and Latino history.
Learning about African American history allows students who are not African American to have a deeper understanding and appreciation for the contributions of African Americans to the world we live in today. This is crucial for building an accepting, more cohesive, and inclusive community for tomorrow.
There really is an endless supply of African American people and events that you can cover in your social studies, American History or U.S. History classes. You just have tolook. The previous slides will be made available after this session.

Just Imagine KidZ has been providing Black History programs since 2018. Programs include Las Vegas After School Program, Stege Summer Program, Saturday Black History classes at the Multicultural Bookstore in Hilltop Richmond.
We have now added Hispanic/Latinx history to our After School & Summer programs. Our programs provide literacy and STEAM elements. The literacy component is an introduction of notable African American and Latinx people through books and videos. The STEAM component of the program is introduced through books and science activities. The population consists of 3rd through 7th grade students in the Greater Richmond Area.
We have also healthy eating, art and a tower gardening component of the classes where children will learn to grow their own food.
Hispanic and Latino are terms that are often used interchangeably, but they have different meanings.

A 10-week strong academic enrichment class where students learn about a number of African Americans mainly inventors and scientists.
We teach using using games, videos and books.
For the podcast, the students perform mock interviews of some of the African Americans they learned about during the program.
The students conduct the interviews while the teacher and/or someone from the community portrays the notable African American.
The students create the questions and answers for the interviews.
It is a fun and engaging class!
